What is the 50/30/20 rule?
A simple framework — not a strict rulebook — for thinking about where your money goes.
The 50/30/20 rule divides your after-tax income into three buckets:
50% — Needs
The essentials. Rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments — the things life requires whether you feel like paying them or not.
30% — Wants
The things that make life enjoyable. Dining out, subscriptions, hobbies, travel, clothes beyond the basics. These are choices, not requirements — and that is perfectly okay.
20% — Savings
Building your future. Retirement contributions, savings, emergency fund, paying down debt faster than the minimum. This bucket is about making money work for you over time.
How to actually use BucketBudget.
Five quick steps — set up once, then a minute a day. The whole point is to keep it light.
- 1
Track your post-tax income as transactions
Each time you get paid, add it from the + button as a credit, using your post-tax (take-home) amount. BucketBudget sizes your buckets from your current month's income — no separate monthly setup to maintain.
See Transactions → - 2
Record transactions as they happen
Tap the + button to add a transaction. Choose Needs, Wants, or Savings, then optionally pick a sub-category — those sub-categories power your Insights breakdown later.
See Transactions → - 3
List all accounts in Net Worth — especially savings
Add every checking, savings, investment, and liability account. When you record a "Transfer from Savings," you pick the source account, so the amount is deducted once — not double-counted as both a savings withdrawal and a regular expense.
Open Net Worth → - 4
Check Progress for the month-over-month view
Visit the Progress tab to see how each bucket is doing compared to your target. Income syncs automatically from your Dashboard — no need to re-enter it here.

Save a Net Worth snapshot periodically
On the Net Worth page, update your account balances whenever you'd like, then tap "Save snapshot" to capture your net worth at that moment. Save as often or as rarely as you like — your chart grows every time you do.

See where it all leads
Tracking your money is only half the job. The other half is letting today's choices point toward something. The Future page turns your accounts, savings goals, and monthly habits into a projection of what is possible — net worth decades out, when a goal gets funded, whether college savings are on track, and how retirement is shaping up.
Net Worth Trajectory
Chart your net worth out 30 years under your own growth rate, alongside conservative and optimistic scenarios. Reclassify an account to see how the curve shifts.
Goal Funding Tracker
Set a target and a monthly amount for each savings goal, then watch the projected funding date move closer as you adjust.
Education Funding
Plan college costs for each child, layer in 529 balances, and see the monthly contribution needed to close the gap.
Retirement Snapshot
A quick readiness check on your investment and retirement balances against the income you want in retirement.
The Future page is part of BucketBudget Pro. The numbers are estimates, not financial advice — and they only stay accurate if you keep your accounts and goals up to date.
This is a guide, not a grade.
BucketBudget is not here to judge you. It is here to show you data about your money — clearly, honestly, and without shame.
Some months your Needs will creep above 50%. Life happens. A car repair, an unexpected medical bill, a rent increase — these things do not mean you are failing. They mean you are human.
Some months your Wants will run high because you took a trip you saved for, or celebrated something worth celebrating. That is not a problem. That is the point.
The goal is not perfection. The goal is awareness — to look at where your money actually goes and make intentional choices over time. Some months you will nail the percentages. Some months you will not. Both are fine.
What you are working toward.
Think of the 50/30/20 framework as a compass, not a cage. It points you in a direction. Over weeks and months of tracking, patterns emerge — and with patterns comes the power to choose differently if you want to.
Maybe you notice your Wants are consistently higher than you thought. Maybe your Savings bucket keeps getting skipped. Maybe you realize your Needs are actually in great shape and you have more room for what you love than you imagined.
That clarity is the whole game. Because when you know where your money goes, you get to decide if that is where you want it to go.
A note on flexibility
The 50/30/20 split is a starting point. In BucketBudget you can adjust these percentages to fit your actual life. If you are in a high cost-of-living city, your Needs might realistically be 60%. If you are laser-focused on paying off debt, maybe your Savings bucket runs higher. Make it yours.
